Former Port Jervis football coach Bob Corvino can’t wait for his niece, Ava Dobbelaer, to become a freshman at Nyack High School next year.
Of course, going from middle school to high school is a monumental rite of passage. Corvino also is looking forward to what Dobbelaer might see walking the halls: A bright, shiny plaque with her uncle’s name on it.
Corvino learned over the weekend that he will be inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame in April. He is a former star football player at Nyack, and his induction plaque will be displayed at the school.
“I still have relatives in that area, so I’m around there a lot,” said Corvino, 63. “It brings back a lot of memories. My nieces and nephews know about it. I think it would be neat if (Ava) saw the plaque in school one day. She would get a kick out of it.”
Corvino retired following the 2007 season as one of Section 9’s most decorated coaches. Corvino’s teams went 161-70-1 in his 24 years. He won five Section 9 titles and was 15-9 against rival Middletown in the Erie Bell game.
Long before he became a fixture at Port Jervis, Corvino starred as a center and linebacker at Nyack.
He started three years at linebacker and two at center, and was named all-Rockland County three times. As a senior in 1968, Corvino was named a first-teamer on the very first all-state team. All classes were included with only 33 players getting picked.
Corvino was named Rockland County’s scholar-athlete of the year as a senior, and later finished third in voting for Rockland County’s player of the decade for the 1960s. He went on to play at Bridgeport (Conn.) University. Corvino, who lives in Huguenot, started teaching at Port Jervis in 1973. He will be inducted into the Hall during a ceremony on April 18 at the Pearl River Elks Club.
“It’s great to be recognized at this point in my life,” Corvino said. “At this age, that doesn’t happen too often. It’s something my family and I are definitely excited about.”
